By achieving the first place in the medal table for the twelfth time Cuba confirmed as a boxing power in Hamburgo’s AIBA World championship.

Five gold and two silver medals assured the supremacy for Rolando Acebal’s team ahead of Uzbekistan (1-3-2) and Kazakhstan (1-3-3). Curiously, a power like Russia failed to achieve a gold medal, and ended up with one silver and a bronze medal.

The first two bouts had contrasting results for the Cubans. Johanys Argilagos came out victorious in the 49 kg division thanks to the effective offensive he displayed for the win (3-2) over Uzbekistan’sHasanboy Dusmatov.

Meanwhile his teammate in the 52 kg divisionYosbany Veitía won (5-0) in one of the most complicated clashes against Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Latipov, despite being out of his typical fighting spirit.

Surprisingly, the three times World champion Lázaro Alvarez went down to France’s Soifiane Oumiha in a balanced contest. The Cuban boxer seemed to be more effective, but he failed to convince the judges.

With impressive footwork Andy Cruz won fair and square over Uzbekistan’s Ikboljon Kholdarovin the 64 kg division.

Roniel Iglésias’ shape was below standards against Usbekistan’sShakhramGiyasov who went on to win the gold medal.

The team’s captainJulio César La Cruz was masterly on the canvas when defeating Irish Joseph Ward. This way the Cuban achieved his fourth World championship like his compatriot JuanHernández Sierra.

Erislandy Savón had one of the best performances in years when beating (3-2) the Olympic championEvgeny Tishchenko from Russia.

In the remaining divisions, where Cuba did not have medals: the winners were Kazak Kairat Yeraliyev (56 kg), Ukraine’sOleksandrKhyzniak (75) and in the super heavyweight division Azerbaijan’s Mahammadrasul Majidov.
