Seven men and three women are preparing to represent Cuba at the World Weightlifting Championships to be held in the US city of Houston, between 21 and 29 of this month

Although the Technical Committee will meet on Monday to define the Cuban team that will participate in the World Weightlifting Championships to be held in the US city of Houston, between 21 and 29 this month, the seven men and three women that aspire to make the grade have prepared strong, because their performance there will determine the number of places in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

This was confirmed to JR, by the National Commissioner of the sport, Jorge Luis Barcelán, who hoped that the selected weightlifters can provide as many points as possible for the Olympic ranking.

Barcelán explained that the points collected now will be added to the 23 achieved last year at the world meeting and that calculation determines the number of places for the summer Olympics that are given to the country.

"In the case of the weights, one does not qualify for the Olympics or by division, or by name. According to their capabilities, we will decide who will go, "he stressed.

World multi-medallist Yoelmis Hernández (85 kg) excels in the men's preselection, and in the same weight Yadier Nunez is also preparing. In 77 kilos, youngsters Adriel La O and Yordanis Espinoza are looking for a spot on the team. Meanwhile, Victor Quinones (94), Alejandro Cisneros (105) and Asnier Rodriguez (+105) complete the list of applicants.

The runner-up of the Pan American Games in Toronto, Marina Rodriguez (63), is training with Niulis González (53) and Sayli Valdespino (58), in order to further demonstrate the potential of Cuban women in the sport.

In 2014, Cuba attended the world festival with a trio of youngsters, but the appointment practically coincided with the Central American and Caribbean Games of Veracruz. So, Adriel and Jordanis occupied positions 17 and 18 respectively, with the same lift of 326 kilos in the biathlon, and Quiñones was in seat 20, lifting 353 kilos.

The commissioner stressed that Houston will give points to the first 25 places of each division and the technical team has the efficiency in the behaviour of athletes on the platform to have the widest possible representation in the Brazilian city next year.
