Colombia Now has a New Peace Agreement

The text arrived after the re-compilation and study of initiatives arising from the deep exercise of dialogue that followed the triumph of the No in the plebiscite of October 2. A constructive atmosphere and good will prevailed in the delegations of the Government and the FARC-EP during its more than 15 days of work in Havana

The heads of delegations of the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP in the peace talks in Havana yesterday signed the new Agreement emanating from the opinions gathered in the various sectors of Colombian society and of the parties themselves to collect the concerns, worries and suggestions of the original text, after the triumph of the No in the plebiscite that was put to consultation of the population.

The Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla presided over the ceremony, which took place in the Cuban capital, along with representatives Humberto de la Calle for the Government and Commander Iván Márquez for the FARC-EP, as well as in the presence of the guarantor countries: Iván Mora for Cuba and Dag Nylander for Norway. Also present were the ambassadors on the island of the accompanying nations: Ali Rogríguez Araque, of Venezuela, and for Chile, Ricardo Herrera.

We invite all of Colombia and the international community, always supportive in the search for reconciliation, to accompany and support this new Agreement, urged the Joint Communiqué No. 4, read by Mora and Nylander.

After the applause following the signing of the new text, De la Calle stressed, it is better in resolving many of the criticisms and dissatisfactions generated by the agreement signed by the parties in Havana on August 25 and, in an official ceremony later , by President Juan Manuel Santos and the leader of the FARC-EP, Timoleón Jiménez, on September 26, in Cartagena de Indias.

In any case, De la Calle considered that the acceptance will still not be unanimous, but he expressed his expectation that the base of support that it collects will make it more solid. In what it gains, he said, is that through a democratic exercise it has been able to build a more solid base of support.

Speaking from the floor, FARC-EP Commander Ivan Marquez said that they have done their best to respond to the aspirations for peace, and that the new agreement is the only way that awaits its implementation, taking into account that with it lay the foundations to begin an even more difficult and complex task: the construction of a stable and lasting peace "to which we hope to be able to add, with new contributions, fruit of negotiation, the comrades of the National Liberation Army, and that the entire institutionalism of the State, the Executive Power, the Congress of the Republic, the High Courts, the Attorney General's Office, the Military and Police Forces, will support it. "

The document describing the modifications and new elements made to the original Agreement, also signed in the Cuban capital on August 25th, can be found on the Internet at www.mesadeconversaciones.com.co/.
