The Continental Latin-American and Caribbean Students Organization (OCLAE) will celebrate its 49th anniversary with the mission of finding new spaces for debate and the strengthening of the Patria Grande so that it could be improved as the only platform in the region that represents and defends the interests of the student youth.
The president of the OCLAE Ricardo Guardia Lugo madethe above statement to JR, and he offered details about the activities that have been coordinated for this August 11, the date when the OCLAE—was founded in Cuba by Fidel’s initiative in 1966— will hold meetings of solidarity, seminars, forums, conferences and mobilizations in several countries.
Guardia Lugo mentioned that the brigades of solidarity that are visiting Cuba, and which are composed of students from their organizational members will pay homage to the OCLAE, among other activities. The meeting will take place at Julio Antonio Mella International Camp on August 11, under the sponsorship of the Cuban Friendship Institute.
In addition, several actions for mobilizing and exchanging experiences with the students will take place in Brazil and Uruguay and in sessions of the general regional secretariats of the organization in the Southern Cone and Central America, aimed at rescuing the historical memory of the student movement.
Guardia Lugo also said that this anniversary—together with the celebration for the International Youth Day— will be also be a moment for reflection about the organization that is indissolubly tied to the life in the continent and which, during these 49 years hasn’t stopped of fighting against imperialism and in favor of the people’s integration, one of its main foundational principles.
«Students have been present in the majority of the social processes in the region, that’s why the new sceneries in our countries, which have progressive governments, constitute new reasons to reinforce the fight and condemn, from the student organizations, the attempts at destabilizing Latin-America. »
The student leader highlighted that the development of actions in favor of the reformation and democratization of education will continue in the defense of a social commitment, as a people’s asset and a universal right, and that the organization will work for the consolidation of the proposals that have arisen from the 17th Congress of the OCLAE held last year in Nicaragua.
Guardia Lugo also remembered that the Cuban Federation of University Students (FEU) has presided over the OCLAE since its foundation, a condition that has been ratified in each of its congresses. Today, the OCLAE is present in 24 countries in Latin-American and Caribbean countries by its nearly 40 organizational members.
