During the opening of the 37th International New Latin American Cinema Festival the renowned British actress Geraldine Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin’s daughter, was awarded the 2014 Coral Prize for best female performance, after her leading role in the film Dólares de arena (Sand Dollars), a co-production between Dominica, Argentina and Mexico which competed in the last Festival.

Charlie Chaplin’s daughter, who features now as chair of the board for fiction full-length films, received the prize with excitement from the Cuban actress Daisy Granados and expressed her joy at being again in her beloved Havana.

The opening gala was harmonized with the youthful air of the ISA Symphony Orchestra, which performed Classics like Adagietto, by Gustav Malher, which Luchino Visconti included in his Muerte en Venecia, and El manisero by Cuban Moisés Simons, which features in the film Crónica de una muerte anunciada and  Vampiros en La Habana, by Juan Padrón, among others, so good music joined the cinematographic phenomenon once more.

Iván Giroud, chair of the Festival, welcomed the moviemakers of the region recalling the emblematic 7th Festival, when the New Latin American Cinema Foundation was created 30 years ago.

Finally, the screening of the Argentine film El clan, by film director Pablo Trapero, set the beginning of this competition for Corales, which anticipates a cinematographic revelry.
