Dancers from 17 countries tried to establish a new Guinness record for a Giant Ring of Casino (a kind of popular dance) that took place yesterday and which brought together 964 people on the La Piragua esplanade in Havana’s water front.
As part as the tenth edition of the Baila en Cuba event, organized by the Paradiso Agency of Cultural Tourism —belonging to Artex—, the infectious Giant Ring achieved a new duration of 14 minutes and 58 seconds in motion, that exceeded the record established in Greece in 2014 when 1,102 people danced nearly seven minutes and 16 seconds.
At the event in Havana, popular songs by orchestras like Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco, Havana D´ Primera, Adalberto Álvarez y su Son, and Juan Formell y los Van Van, allowed participants to keep in motion and enjoy a unique and unrepeatable moment.
The validity of the event was watched over by nearly 20 arbiters placed in the dancing location and experts from the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) took the time of the test. In addition, prominent dance personalities, like the Professor of the Arts University Dr. Bárbara Balbuena and the Director of the Casino Ring Project Juan Gómez, were witnesses to the Giant Ring. The event was checked by several cameras and the final result is to be published soon.
