In the last few decades, technological advances have enabled the exploration of the seabed like never before. And our country has not been short of projects.

Modern archeology has also reached the deep seas in search of remains of old civlizations. A group of submarine lytic structures the researchers called Mega, has been object of speculation; however, even today its true nature remains a mystery.

The discovery took place in 2000, near the Cuban Guanahacabibes peninsula. The irregular rock formations of Mega seem to be somewhat organized. At least, this was the belief of Russian-Canadian oceanographer and the Canadian businessman Paul Weinzweig, while they performed sonar sweeps trying to collect treasures from old sunken ships and galleons which were wrecked in the western region of Cuba.

The expedition which bumped into the lytic rarity was made up by a team of Cuban and Canadian scientists who worked in the Exploramar project and sailed aboard the Ulises ship, outfitted with high technlogy.

Zelitsky sent an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) equipped with camera, lights and sonars, but the depth (between 600 and 750 m) and the poor visibility obstructed the collection of evidence to prove one of the two hypotheses.

However, the controversial statements of the Canadians were echoed by the world media, which went as far as reporting the existence of pyramids, geometrical shapes, polished walls, Mayan ruins, foundations of a city which disappeared amid a cataclysm, granite rocks, there were even speculations that the place had been known since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In order to explore the geological characteristics of the area, Doctor Manuel Iturralde-Vinent, a great connoisseur of the Caribbean geological evolution, joined the expedition in late 2001, since then the available information has been reassessed.

In statements to this newspaper, Iturralde said that the side-scan sonar showed an area where there was landslide in the steep slopes where this processes are still active.

Definitively false are the affirmations on the finding of huge pyramids or walls and other structures built. That is not proven.

The researcher looked for the images that could indicate that on this areathere is something human or extraterrestrial (the most used by the press, and the author of the discovery itself), he compared with similar elements on the Guanahacabibes, and concluded that "there is a perfect resemblance, that nature can create these structures."

However, a mystery to be solved "matches an image captured by the robot in the depths, of what appears to be a solid plate of gray color. It is more or less square, one centimeter or a little more thick, 18 or 20 centimeters on the side and composition unknown, Iturralde warned.

"How long has the plate been in the depths and how did it get there?

From the scientific point of view it is a rarity, although it could well fall from a ship and sink into the water, or was contained in the rock and was exposed by erosion.

Atlantis searchers around the world have pointed more than once to the Caribbean as the site of that ancient civilization - the famous continent that disappeared at sea - is sustained in the writings by the Greek philosopher Plato (427-347 A.C.) about 2,400 years ago, who described the empire of the warlike Atlanteans on an island "Larger than Libya and Asia together" set in the Atlantic Ocean. Many have supposed something of reality in the story and following as a map of what Plato has said have made unsuccessful attempts to locate that lost kingdom.

"As a dreamer, I would not like to rule out the possibility of finding something interesting there, but I think at this point it cannot be said it is the work of intelligent beings, because there is no evidence. Although they mentioned scriptures, I did not see any nor have they been shown. So, scientifically is not acceptable, because there is no evidence ", the expert concluded.
