A total of 3 141 earthquakes were registered in the national territory fromJanuary1st. to June30 this year, 1,584 of these in the Pilón-Chivirico area, to the south of Uvero, town ofthe municipality of Guamá, Santiago de Cuba, told JR Deputy Technical Director of the National Seismological Research Center (CENAIS), Doctor of Sciences Enrique Diego Arango Arias.

The specialist highlighted that the 11 earthquakes reported were perceptible for the population and the strongest felt in Cuba´s eastern region affected homes in some localities of Granma and occurred on January 17 with 5.8 magnitude.

He said that the area of Pilón-Chivirico is the most "energetic" of the country, followed by the sectors of Santiago-Baconao (994) and Imías (134). Pilón-Chivirico and Santiago-Baconao are the most dynamics of the East fault, south of this region.

In 2016, according to a CENAIS report dated January 3, 2017, some 5 756 earthquakes were registered in the national territory, 61 out of these were perceptible, and were located in the eastern region.

The most important seismic activity last year between January and February, was located southwest of the city of Santiago de Cuba, specifically in the Green Sea sector, where there were 1 454 earthquakes between January 17 and February 18, with 38 being perceived.

Our country, as Arango Arias explained, is located in the border of a plate tectonics, especially in the southeast part. This fact increases the probability of earthquakes of greater intensity in the next few years, and it is therefore urgent to continue working towards the reduction of vulnerabilities, mainly in the territories of greater activity and seismic risk.
