Hundreds of people crowded around the flood, staring at the slow but ever-threatening passage of the sea. The inhabitants of the northern area of the coast of Havana lived tense moments on Monday afternoon, because of the penetration of the sea motivated by the persistent winds that are raging these days in the Cuban West.

Bárbara Morales, a neighbour of Paseo 101, between 5th. and 7th. (Calzada), told this reporter to have left her stuff sheltered before the evacuation. Nevertheless, she doubts finding them intact before the vision of the sea that little by little was penetrating into Havana appeared.

According to Civil Defence officials, the penetrations began around four o´clock in the afternoon, and would continue to advance until seven o´clock at night, the estimated time of the high tide or high point of the tide. All this forced the withdrawal of the electric service to the affected area, and proceeding with the evacuation of its inhabitants.

Lieutenant Colonel Mario Garcia Salas, head of the Civil Defence Organ in Havana, explained that up to the time of this report, the water had reached Calzada (7th) by Paseo, and had spread from K to 12 streets.

Garcia Salas added that, according to the vulnerability and risk study plans of the province, sea penetrations were moderate, and the water had reached the estimated point, according to Special Report Number 2 of the Institute of Meteorology.

"As we can see, the penetrations are not significant in height, because they only reach the level of the containment. However, in lower areas, such as the part of Calzada, there has been more to worry about, "he added.

Jair Morales Rodríguez, the first secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Party inPlaza de la Revolucion, pointed out that no loss of human life or material resources had been reported due to early warnings and the application of all necessary measures to safeguard both the population as well as their assets.

The territorial defensive unit, composed of fire-fighters, the public health system, the Red Cross, and the partners of water resources, remained in activity to guarantee security actions in that sense.
