Deadly Risks!

Do we believe we are invulnerable on the road or do we think that drivers are solely responsible for what happens on it? In Cuba, pedestrians increasingly affect the occurrence of traffic accidents

The pavement is wet. The father accelerates and the mother smiles, as they take their older son to school on his motorcycle and his little sister to the children´s circle. However, the lens of the camera is astonished: the little ones are not wearing protective helmets. Does anyone care?

It is a sad image. There is a violation of what is established in article 72 of Law 109, Road Safety Code, which entails the imposition of a fine and the equivalent of 12 points on the driver´s license for not wearing a helmet by the passengers, But actually four people on a motorcycle exceeds what is permissible, even with the well-supported justification of "the problem is that transport is very bad."

Don´t Mom and Dad think about the danger that their children are in when they have a major impact on their skull in the event of an accident? What happens is that you always think that nothing is going to happen ...

The drivers of the cars in the other image included in this photo report never imagined when leaving their houses that the day would end like this. I do not know the causes of this incident, but speeding, unnecessary overtaking, disrespect for the right of way and the drinking of alcoholic beverages are among the most frequent.

Neither does the young man who rides through the streets of the city "on board" his skateboard has planned for the possibility of an accident on the road. Many make rash manoeuvres, zigzag and ignore the traffic lights. They avoid obstacles, compete with each other and with cyclists, and forget that they must also respect the law. Believe me, I have seen them.

And those who do not have vehicles to move around, how many times have we crossed the street like them, without attending to the traffic light that, with the red light, tells us to cross? You may now remember how the other day, like the lady of the picture, you had to stay there, on the dividing line of an avenue, not taking the risk.

Do we believe we are invulnerable on the road or do we think that drivers are solely responsible for what happens on it? Are we not shocked if I tell you that every two minutes a person dies in the world from a traffic accident, and of them, about 60 per cent are pedestrians?

In Cuba, pedestrians increasingly cause the occurrence of traffic accidents, according to assessments by the National Transit Authority. From article 144 to 147 of Law 109 establishes the correct action of a pedestrian on the road and is otherwise defined as an infraction that, although classified as less dangerous, is a reason for imposing a fine. In addition, article 180 of the Penal Code, in paragraphs 1 and 2, specifies that anyone who, without being a driver of a vehicle, may be liable for a traffic accident.

However, I invite you to respond: Is it necessary to apply legislation or can we realize for ourselves our lack of responsibility and the little love we have for life? There are fatal risks.
