WASHINGTON, October 22.- Cubans living in various parts of the US on Saturday demanded the immediate lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the island by its northern neighbour for more than half a century.
PL reported that during the sessions in this capital of the 3rd. Meeting of Cubans living in the United States, participants also called for the full normalization of bilateral relations, a scenario that includes, insists Cuba, with the end of a siege, rejected categorically by the world, including the country that is running it.
The forum, held previous editions in 2010 and 2012, is the first held in the context of rapprochement between Havana and Washington that led in the past to the resumption of diplomatic ties last year, the reopening of embassies and the signing of over a dozen agreements in areas of common interest.
The demands of the Cubans on US soil to cease the blockade took place just five days before the discussion at the General Assembly of the UN of a new draft resolution on the need to lift the unilateral and extraterritorial sanctions imposed by the White House, still in force despite the bilateral approach.
Since 1992, the Assembly has firmly rejected that policy. In the past year, the Cuban proposal was backed by 191 of the 193 UN member countries, since only the United States and its ally Israel voted against it.
The 3rd. Meeting of Cuban residents in the northern nation met in panels and featured interventions by the ambassador of Island in the United States, Jose Ramon Cabañas.
